'OZ Racism': Some Facts

I'm a little late to comment on the racist attacks on Indian students in Australia. No doubt, a lot told and written about Australian racism and the poor Indian victims! Our honorable union minister of external affairs in Australia, the first such high-level visit since the attacks.

The 21st century has witnessed one of the very positive side of globalisation-mobility of education services and there is no better example than Australia which transformed itself into a mass exporter of education. As per studies more than 94000 Indians study there along with thousands of other nationalities.

As a person' i don't feel any justification of the media reports on the unfortunate incidents as 'oz racism' since the media is just echo chambering what the victims narrate.True, racism does exist in Australia, even the Australian government admits that. But it doesn't sound that the society as a hole is racist. On the other hand we failed to appreciate the Australian efforts to tackle the incidents by quickly established a task force.

The very strange fact is that only Indian students are being attacked in Australia even though it has students from all over the world. Cricket and English language made Indians a little more arrogant,I guess. And superiority complex always invite troubles , especially when we are in another sort of culture. There comes a lot of complaints about the way Indian students behave in a multicultural society like Australia. It is not uncommon for 15 students to share accommodation rented for four. Disdain towards serving staffs (viewing as servants), dirty comments towards women(thinking it is India), playing Indian music loudly on public transport, littering, spitting and let me not mentioning the highly unhealthy practices in male toilets-are some in them.

The Indian government and its external affairs ministry are well aware of the way Indian students behave in a modern society (sorry 4 exceptional students). That awareness made them to advice Indian students to "practice the right kind of behaviour" and curiously" keep your home clean".

And most important, the motives of Indian students for going to Australia is not only educational but a permanent residency at any cost. But on campuses it is rare to see an Indian student mingling with students from other nations, even with Australians. This high orthodox mentality invites a lot of problems as far as a multicultural country like Australia is concerned. One must be aware of current developments, its history, culture or multiculturalism before seeking permanent residency in a country. But they expect to be protected even though they have no commitment towards the nation.

The only solution i find is to modify personal conduct, understand local culture and respect the same.If really needed, go for some pre-departure programmes to learn "how things really work in Australia."
( With a lot of input from 'The Times of India' , Sometimes it's like a copy n paste article since I like that)

Adarsh,..The Gypsies were similarly treated in Europe. Let's not forget, the Gypsies came from India. It appears that no matter where they go, the Indians are not welcome. Australia is not a racist country. There are atleast half 2 lakh Chinese students in Australia (a lot more than Indian students), and you don't see the Chinese being attacked. If Aussies were racists, then wouldn't they attack all foreign nationals? the reasons why only indians are being targeted is quite simple imagine a average aussie who does menial labour jobs and barely manages to keep ends meet and durin the time of recession also does not have a job gurantee and then he watches in jealousy the only community livin in luxury and comfort and they r bound to feel insecure and jealous. Some aussies even think that ,Australians (real Australians of European descent) should be beating their treasonous leaders instead of the racial foreigners. and tht it's the leaders who are giving the country away to racial foreigners. They are working to make Australia a majority non-white country. But when i ponder upon all of the above i tend to think why the hell do the indians need to go abroad & learn. With atleast ten's of lakhs of instituions ( govt. approvd) in our country its even lame to think that Indians too interested in Western ways tend to fly out. thats escapism.
